Hinge
One breakout at the London open, only after a compressed night.
Hinge waits for the overnight range to compress, then takes at most one breakout when London opens. If the night was already wide, or the morning calendar is crowded, the day is skipped.

- about x (forward test)
Before London opens, it measures the night's range and compares it with the last few weeks of nights.
Only a range in the narrowest part of that comparison counts as compressed. Otherwise the day is over before it starts.
It places one buy-stop above the range and one sell-stop below it. When one fills, the other is cancelled.
The stop goes back inside the range. Part of the position is closed at a fixed multiple of the risk; the rest trails behind the M30 bars.
Anything still open at the end of the London session is closed.
Hinge stands down when any of these is true.
In the forward test Hinge sat out xx% of the sessions it was eligible for. Each stand-down writes one journal line naming the rule and the value that triggered it.
SD-01Night range not compressed
A breakout from a wide range has already spent much of its move. Hinge needs stored energy, not a market already running.
SD-02High-impact release between 07:00 and 10:00
A release inside the window decides the direction instead of the breakout, and stops slip on the spike.
SD-03Spread above the cap at the open
Spreads are often widest in the first minutes; an entry then starts the trade with a deficit.
SD-04Both sides would trigger inside one bar
A whipsaw open. Hinge cancels both orders rather than guess.
SD-05A UK or US bank holiday
Thin participation makes the open less meaningful.
SD-06Weekly loss limit reached
Hinge stops for the rest of the week and resumes on Monday.
Every input, its default and its limits
Ranges are enforced: a value outside them is refused when the EA starts. Defaults are the settings the forward test runs on.
| Input | Type | Default | Range | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|---|
RiskPerTrade | double | x.x | x.x – x.x | Percent of balance at risk on the one trade of the day. |
CompressionPercentile | int | xx | xx – xx | How narrow, compared with recent nights, the range must be. Lower means pickier and fewer trades. |
LookbackNights | int | xx | xx – xx | How many past nights the compression is measured against. |
PartialCloseR | double | x.x | x.x – x.x | At this multiple of the risk, part of the position is closed. |
MaxSpreadPoints | int | xx | xx – xx | Pending orders are not placed while the spread is above this. |
WeeklyLossLimit | double | x.x | x.x – x.x | Percent of balance. Once reached, no new orders until Monday. |
MagicNumber | int | xxxxxx | any | Tags Hinge's orders so it never touches anything else. |
Raising the caps or the risk to make the EA trade more does not make it better. The caps sit where testing showed the edge disappears, and every extra trade costs you spread and commission.

Lot size comes from RiskPerTrade and the stop distance. Leverage only changes the margin the broker holds.
Pending orders must be allowed on the account. Some account types restrict stop orders close to the market at the open.
Anyone who expects a trade every day. Hinge skips most mornings and can go a fortnight without an entry.

ChangelogHinge in testing
Two separate measurements. The backtest is hypothetical; the forward test is past performance on one live account. Drawdown is printed before return.
| Test | Period | Max drawdown | Net result | Trades | Sat out |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Backtest (hypothetical) | Out-of-sample, xxxx – xxxx | −x.x% | xx.x% | xxx | xx% |
| Forward test (live) | xx.xx.xxxx – today | −x.x% | xx.x% | xxx | xx% |
Backtest results are hypothetical. They come from running the EA on historical prices, with costs modelled rather than paid, and with the benefit of hindsight in how the rules were chosen. No backtest accounts for every effect of real trading, such as liquidity at the moment of an order or a broker's execution on a given day.
Forward-test results are past performance on one live account at one broker. Your results will differ with your broker, account type, terminal, settings and start date. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future results.
